Fumie Shibata

Fumie Shibata is a Japanese-born product designer from Yamanashi, Japan. She is internationally recognized for her multidisciplinary practice spanning furniture, daily goods, healthcare technology, electronics, and spatial design. Collaborating with numerous Japanese manufacturers as well as leading global brands, she has developed a design approach that bridges cultural perspectives with industrial expertise. A defining characteristic of Shibata’s work is her pursuit of forms that combine softness with precision. She creates products that are intuitive, calm, and physically close to the user, grounded in a deep sensitivity to human perception. By balancing emotional warmth with technical clarity, her designs integrate seamlessly into everyday life while maintaining a quiet yet distinctive presence.Her work has received wide international acclaim. In 2021, she was honored with the EDIDA (Elle Deco International Design Awards) Lighting Category Product Award. She has also received the DFA Design for Asia Awards Grand Prize, the iF Design Award Gold Prize, and the Red Dot Design Award—recognitions that underscore both her creative originality and industrial impact. In addition to her design practice, Shibata is actively engaged in education and cultural activities. She is a member of the Japan Design Committee and a professor at Tama Art University. From 2018 to 2019, she served as Chair of the Jury for the Good Design Awards in Japan. She is the author of Forms within Forms, a publication that reflects her ongoing exploration of form, perception, and human-centered design.
